Golf mk1 GTI instrument cluster / speedometer / tacho

After starting the build of the speedometer for the 3rd time, i think i'm in the right path.
Instead of using the original tdi speedo or a full digital speedo with a smaller board i found an interesting solution.

Older ibiza have a digital/analogic combo that uses a electronic signal to display the speed and convert it do move the mechanical numbers. Just what i wanted to have a stock look.

For the tachometer i read that the original mk1 one should work with the ecu signal with no modifications, i hope so...

The original MK3 conector was adapted to the mk1 cluster.

The speedo will sit on the right side as the original mk1 and the new mk5 or mk6.

This is the original ibiza circuit board where you can see the hole where sits the detachable speedo and the condensors that i would like to know if i have to use or not as they sit in the path of the current that goes to the speedo circuit.

On the left the resistors and the diode connect to the battery light

1 - T28/10 green wire from speedometer conector
+ - +12v
-  - ground

The smoked light symbols were cut from the original CE2 cluster
The battery light circuit is a copy from the CE2 cluster.
The oil light uses an inverted relay so it swithes of the light when the tdi switch send ground to the relay proving that there is oil pressure.
The malfunction Indicator Lamp is directly connected to the pin 20.

  1. Hi there!
I see you nkow what you are doing. :)
I have the same mk1 dash, and try to build in my car, but i can't find any instuction about the wiring. Can you help me? I see that the tachometer, fuel level and water temp are separated, but I don't know which pin mean which wire. Can you send me a picture, or upload, that explain which is the GND, +12V, signal for each instrument?
    Thanks!

    1. the original dash has a circuit on the back that is how you see with pin does what, you just have to follow the path that goes from what you want to he dash connector

  2. I can tell you that the same VDO speedometer has Opel Calibra V6 and Vectra A V6(Vauxhall Cavalier Mk3 V6) and it goes from 0-260km/h. But note that only V6 models have electronicaly drive speedometer gauge, the rest models has mechanical speedometer princip as your Golf Mk1. I see on my plate that some elements are different and have more elements on some places. I can photo it if you want.
